Fundations
 
 Through the Fundations program, students will be instructed in phonemic awareness and word study.  Fundations sets the foundation for writing with direct teaching of handwriting, spelling, and the basic skills for capitalization and punctuation.  More specifically, the skills that will be taught through this program are:
  • Phonological Awareness
  • Phoneme Awareness and the Alphabetic Principle
  • Sound Mastery
  • Forming Key Linkages:  Letter Name, Formation, and Sound
  • Phonics
  • Vocabulary
  • High Frequency "Trick" Words
  • Fluency

Kidwriting and Creative Writing:

 

Sentences and short stories will be written throughout the school year.  First graders are expected to:
  • write in complete sentences
  • use appropriate punctuation (period, question mark, exclamation mark)
  • use appropriate letter formation (upper case and lower case)
  • use correct spacing in between words (left to right, top to bottom)
  • edit
  • correctly spell their spelling words and sight words in their writing
Writing-Content with Format

  • simple 4-step how-to instructions
  • rhyming couplets
  • structure (focus, prewriting, organization and order using a beginning, middle, and end)
