Second Grade Quarterly Benchmarks- A Closer Look

First Quarter

·         Read Independently at  a Level 18

·         Sustain reading for 10-15 minutes

·         Automatically recognize a large number of sight words

·         Quickly apply word-solving strategies to words with more than one syllable

·         Use multiple reading strategies flexibly (See Reading Hand)

·         Begin to read silently

·         Read fiction, nonfiction, poetry, plays

·         Retell a story after reading  a book

o   Make predictions based on the title and pictures

o   Use characters’ names

o   Put events in sequence

o   Include language from the story

o   Make a connection (to their life, to another book, or to the world

o   Indentify author’s purpose

 

Second Quarter

·         Read Independently at a Level 20

·         Sustain reading for 10-15 minutes

·         Mastered sight words

·         Quickly applies word-solving strategies to words with more than one syllable

·         Use multiple reading strategies flexibly (See Reading Hand)

·         Read silently

·         Read fiction, nonfiction, poetry, plays

o   Adjust rate of reading to match the difficulty of text

·         Retell a story after reading a book

o   Make predictions based on the title and pictures

o   Use characters’ names

o   Put events in sequence

o   Include language from the story

o   Make a connection (to their life, to another book, or to the world

o   Indentify author’s purpose
