First Grade Quarterly Benchmarks- A Closer Look

First Quarter

·         Read Independently at  a Level  4

·         Know letter sounds quickly and accurately

·         Read three letter short vowel words (can, get, pin, mop, but)

·         Retell a story after reading  a book

o   Including characters, events in sequence

·         Begin to use reading strategies (Reference Getting to Know your child’s RC, hand)

 

Second Quarter

·         Read independently on a Level  8

·         Use known words to solve unfamiliar words (If you know  stop, and you know day, you can read stay)

·         Sees familiar parts in words (If you know day, use what you know to read today)

·         Reading is phrased and smooth

·         Reads words with endings (-s, -ed, -ing) looks, looked, looking

·         Uses several  reading strategies to fix errors ( Reference reading hand together)
